SOAP!
SOAP is a method for Bible reading that helps us to slow down and focus on a part of the Bible and even can help us to respond to God’s word. One of the saddest things that can happen is when we read the Bible and walk away confused. SOAP, like regular soap is something that you can use every day, and can make Bible reading easier!
You start with S for Scripture. You need to have a defined part of the Bible that you are reading. That could be a chapter or a paragraph, but you don’t want to pick something too long.
Next comes O for Observation. In order to find observations ask the question, “What stands out to me?” “What seems to be important to the person writing this?” “What is the big idea?” This could be the moral taught by a narrative story or the concept of an argument in a letter.
After that is A for Application. If what I just read is true, then what does that mean for my life? How does this speak to me and what is going on in my world? I don’t just want to memorize and know Bible stories, God’s word speaks to me when I see what it says in my life.
Finally we come to P for Prayer. Your prayer should be informed by what you just read. Perhaps you are convicted of sin in your life and this is an opportunity for you to confess your sin to God. Maybe you are glad for something you learned about God - tell him! Our prayers can be asking, confessing, praising and adoring. God can handle your emotions so share them with him!
We hope this helps you as you learn more about God this week at Zona!
S is for Scripture
If you don’t read the Bible regularly, read Proverbs 23:4-12. If you read the Bible regularly, read the whole chapter.
O is for Observation
What stands out to you? Does one of these sections remind you of anything?
A is for Application
How does the truth you read fit into your world? Can you act it out? As you consider this truth, how would you fit it into your everyday life? If it doesn’t fit, what needs to change?
P is for Prayer
Spend some time with God and respond to him. Be specific in your response.
S is for Scripture
If you don’t read the Bible regularly, read Proverbs 24:1-14. If you read the Bible regularly, read the whole chapter.
O is for Observation
What do you see as you read? What does this say about wisdom?
A is for Application
How can you apply the truth of what you read? Does it change how you see wisdom and foolishness?
P is for Prayer
Talk to God. Maybe you feel convicted or what to share what you’re learning about him. There may be areas where work needs to be done. Pray specifically about those areas.
S is for Scripture
If you don’t read the Bible regularly, read Proverbs 25:14-22. If you read the Bible regularly, read the whole chapter.
O is for Observation
What jumps out to you as you read? What comes out of wickedness? How are you responding to others?
A is for Application
How can you apply this? Do you need to adjust your life based on what the Bible says? What needs to change in your life for you to love others better.
P is for Prayer
Take time to recognize God and his ways, and if you’re not following them - confess that to God (1 John 1:9).
S is for Scripture
If you don’t read the Bible regularly, read Proverbs 26:13-28. If you read the Bible regularly, read the whole chapter.
O is for Observation
What grabs your attention? What does this say about the things we say?
A is for Application
How can you do this? Does your speech need to change?
P is for Prayer
Pause and speak with God. Don’t get distracted, be intentional but take time to respond to what he has taught you in his word.
S is for Scripture
For today we want to encourage everyone to read the whole chapter of Proverbs 27. Make sure to read it slowly and try to get as much as you can from each part.
O is for Observation
Was there a stanza that stuck out to you the most? What does it mean?
A is for Application
What does it mean for your life? How can you live it out?
P is for Prayer
If you need to confess sin, do it. If you want to ask God for help, do it. If you are glad for camp and what you’ve learned, tell him. It is good for you to talk with God.
